Who we are

BAR is The Science Alliance for Animals. We bring progressive scientists, institutes and organisations together with animal advocates, groups that traditionally sat on opposite sides, and point them at one goal: a future where research thrives without harming animals.

We remove the barriers that keep science tied to animal harm, in policy, funding, education, and outdated practice. We fund and validate non-animal methods. And we make the case that replacement is better science, so the whole field can move, not just a few labs.

Around 250,000 animals are bred or used for science in New Zealand every year, the highest count since reporting began in 1987. Nobody wants this, including the scientists doing the work under an ageing system.

When New Zealand leads on ethical, effective science, it gives every other country a path to follow.
